Scar tissue Fascial restrictions Talk to a Specialist

What It Is

Stainless steel tools, guided by trained hands.

When scar tissue or a fascial restriction has settled in, stretching and general massage can only do so much. Graston Technique is built to find that exact spot and work through it with more precision than a hand alone can manage.

It’s a specific, branded form of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization: a set of contoured, ergonomic stainless steel instruments, each shaped for a different area of the body, with edges more sensitive to scar tissue and fascial adhesions than fingers alone. As your therapist works the instrument over the area, it locates exactly where tissue is stuck and applies controlled pressure to break that restriction up.

Graston is one specific, patented method within the broader category of instrument-assisted soft tissue work, built around a defined set of tools and a structured protocol your physical therapist is trained in.

What It Helps

Where Graston Technique shines.

You’ve had that tightness so long you’ve stopped calling it a problem, it’s just how that shoulder feels now. It doesn’t have to be. If old scar tissue or a stubborn fascial restriction is limiting how a joint or muscle moves, Graston is often the fastest way to work through it.

What A Session Looks Like

Three steps, one visit.

1

We map the restriction by hand first.

2

The instrument goes to work. Pressure builds gradually, and it’s always your call how much.

3

We retest the movement it was blocking, same visit.

Why It Works

Four reasons it earns a place in your plan.

Works through restrictions hands alone can’t reach.

Breaks up scar tissue that’s been there for years.

Follows a proven, repeatable protocol.

Backed by a plan with an endpoint, not a stand-alone fix.

Questions, Answered

Graston Technique, no mystery.

You’ll usually feel firm pressure and, over more restricted areas, some soreness similar to a deep massage. Mild redness at the surface is common and fades quickly. Noticeable bruising is less common, and we adjust pressure to your tolerance the entire session. It’s always your call how much pressure feels right.

Graston is one specific, branded example of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization, or IASTM, which is the broader category of technique. Graston uses a defined set of stainless steel tools and a trained protocol; other IASTM tools and methods exist, but Graston is one of the most established.

Graston Technique is typically billed as manual therapy within your physical therapy visit, and most plans that cover PT cover it. We verify your exact benefits before your first session, so there’s no surprise on your bill. Questions before then? Call us at (703) 763-3922.
